My Favorite Animator- Ralph Bakshi

Ralph Bakshi (born October 29, 1938) is an American director of animated and live-action films. In the 1970s, he established an alternative to mainstream animation through independent and adult-oriented productions. Between 1972 and 1992, he directed nine theatrically released feature films, five of which he wrote. He has been involved in numerous television projects as director, writer, producer and animator.

Beginning his career at the Terrytoons television cartoon studio as a celpolisher, Bakshi was eventually promoted to director. He moved to the animation division of Paramount Pictures in 1967 and started his own studio, Bakshi Productions, in 1968. Through producer Steve Krantz, Bakshi made his debut feature film, Fritz the Cat, released in 1972. It was the first animated film to receive an X rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, and the most successful independent animated feature of all time.

My Favorite Animated Movie: Fire and Ice

Fire and Ice DVD (D) (2 disc set)

It began as a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two of the greatest icons of the fantasy genre: controversial animator Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Wizards, and Lord of the Rings) and legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta (creator of the iconic Conan the Barbarian,Vampirella, and Edgar Rice Burroughs book covers). It became - and remains - one of the most startling animation epics of all time. Now experience a world unlike any ever seen, where savage warriors, horrific monsters, and luscious maidens battle for the soul of a civilization in a time of good and evil, pleasure and pain, and Fire & Ice.

Masters of Animation: Hanna Barbera

Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera are the undisputed kings of not only Saturday morning cartoons, but TV cartoons of all time. They started at MGM creating one of the longest running cartoons in history Tom and Jerry. After MGM closed the studio they had no where to go so they started Hanna-Barbera Studios. Their first cartoon Ruff and Ready became an instant hit. That was followed up by a an unbroken string of hit cartoons like Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, and Quickdraw McDraw.

But that was only the beginning in the 1960’s Hanna-Barbera created pure classic cartoon gold with a take of on “The Honeymooners” called “The Flintstones” that was the first cartoon to debut on Primetime television and became one of the top rated show unheard of for a cartoon. A feat only matched by “The Simpsons”. With the Flintstones now a hit on Primetime TV Hanna-Barbera followed them with “The Jetsons” and an action-adventure cartoon about the adventures of a young boy called “Jonny Quest”.

But it is still Saturday mornings where we really see the World of Hanna Barbera. Their action-adventure shows have been what Saturday mornings are made of with heroes like Mightor, Birdman, Frankenstein Jr., The Heculoids, and the one and only Space Ghost. Hanna-Barbera but the bang in Saturday mornings that made kids like me wake up at 6:00 am in the morning and stayed glued to the TV all morning long. Even today these cartoons are still the standard that all cartoons are judged no other studio can make that claim.

I have my own memories of watching Hanna-Barbera cartoons and very special memory of meeting Joe Barbera at Circle Art Galley in Chicago in the 1980’s at that meeting I got to talk him about all his characters and then I got the honor of signing along with him an animation cell featuring of all of the his creations only because I could name all of them that surprised not only Joe Barbera, but everyone at the gallery. That was a great moment of my life one I will always remember

Hanna-Barbera Rebirth

Back in the 60's Hanna-Barbera gave us a line up of fantastic cartoon characters like, The Flinstones, Scooby-Doo, Jonny Quest, Space Ghost and many others. That had us glued to our TV screens and naturally a line of comics followed. Then all to soon the Hanna-Barbera line up seemed to disappear only to be remembered by us toonheads. But now they are back DC Comics has brought back your favorite Hanna-Barbera characters in all new stories that are bolder and badder than anything I remember. Tom and Jerry

is an animated cat and mouse team that formed the basis of a successful series of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) theatrical short subjects created, written, and directed by animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera (later of Hanna-Barbera fame). The cartoons centered on a never-ending rivalry between a housecat (Tom) and a brown mouse (Jerry), whose chases and battles often involved comic violence. Many generations of kids have grown up watching this memorable duo throughout the world. Even today, more than 70 years after the first cartoon came out, Tom and Jerry remain two of the dearest and most recognizable cartoon characters in the world.

Filmation

When it comes to animation Filmation should not exist according to owner For their first series The Adventures of Superman they had no writers, actors, and no animators. In fact they didn’t know how to do animation for TV something they did not tell DC Comics when they gave them the rights. Of course DC was furious with them when found out what Flimation did but since the show was a hit DC let them have the rights to other DC characters including Batman, Aquaman and the member of the Justice League.

Filmation then got other comic book characters like Archie and not created a hit cartoon but a number one song called “Sugar, Sugar”. Filmation also brought back classic heroes Flash Gordon, The Lone Ranger, and Tarzan. Filmation also created their own characters like He-man, and She-Ra. Filmation did branch out into movies but the less said about that is the better. Still Filmation has created some of the best Saturday morning cartoons that should have never existed.

Masters of Animation

Louis "Lou" Scheimer (October 19, 1928 – October 17, 2013) was an American producer, one of the original founders of Filmation, an animation company, and also credited as an executive producer of many of its cartoons Early in Filmation's history, Scheimer also contributed a number of guest or secondary voices for the various productions. Amongst these was the voice of N'kima, Tarzan's monkey companion in Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle (1976–81).

Scheimer played a significant role in the creation of the cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Bravestarr.[2] Aside from being the executive producer, he was also co-credited for the series' musical score under the pseudonym "Erika Lane" (which combined the names of his daughter Erika and son Lane), and it had also been used as a character name on the 1967 Filmation series Fantastic Voyage. He became a voice actor for the show (as he had done for many of his company's previous productions), going under the pseudonym "Erik Gunden". The last name was taken from his father's original surname: "Gundenscheimer" (which was later shortened to Sheimer). The first name was Lou's middle name, which he was not given by his parents, but instead by his wife Jay, who felt that he should have one. Scheimer's contribution to the cast was in fact most notable as he voiced several supporting characters, including Orko (and other characters with a similar Smurfs-voice), Stratos, King Randor and others.

He-man and the Masters of the Universe

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

is an American animated television series produced by Filmation and based on Mattel's successful toy line. The show, often referred to He-Man, was one of the most popular animated children's shows of the 1980s, and has retained a heavy cult following to this day. It takes place on the fictional planet of Eternia, a planet of magic, myth, and fantasy where the lead character, Prince Adam, uses the Power Sword. When he holds it aloft and says the magic words "By the Power of Grayskull, I have the Power!" he is transformed into He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. Together with his close allies, He-Man defends Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor.

That's All Folks!  My Looney Tunes Memories

When the Warner Bros. opened their animation studios it was to go against the powerhouse Disney Studios and to create characters to complete with the popularity of Mickey Mouse and co. The Warners though they would get the happy family friendly characters like Disney, but luckily for us they got the zany and wacky characters like, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, and that rascally rabbit Bugs Bunny. These characters where created by animators Bob Clampett, Friz Freeling, Tex Avery, and Chuck Jones.

They along with voice master Mel Blanc gave us cartoons that have delighted audiences for over 70 years. While at times the Warner Bros. where not pleased with the characters that came out of their studios at times. Luckily they didn’t look too closely at what the guys where doing so many cartoons that wasn’t what the Warners wanted got through. Like “Robin Daffy” a take off ” The Adventures of Robin Hood” and Opera takes off like “What an Opera Doc” and “Rabbit of Seville”. Of course the Warner Bros. did take credit when “Knighty Night Bugs” won and Oscar for best animated cartoon.

But all good and funny things must come to an end and the Loony Tunes studio was closed. But that did not stop the fun. When TV came along the Loony Tunes found a home and came back to delight children with the cartoons their parents watched years earlier. New Loony Tunes came out after that and now they are some of the most watched cartoons all over the world. Personally I loved Lonny Tunes I find them funnier than any other cartoons.

My favorite characters are not Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck but minor characters like Marvin the Martian and The three Bears by Chuck Jones. Speaking of Chuck Jones I got to spend time with him at a Circle  Gallery showing  in Chicago of his work in the 1980’s. He talked about his time at the Loony Tunes and how many of the Loony Tunes characters where created. Loony Tunes are still some of best and funniest characters ever and will live on as long as children young and old need to laugh.

Masters of Animation: Chuck Jones

ANIMATION ISN'T THE ILLUSION OF LIFE; IT IS LIFE.

"In a career spanning over 60 years, Jones made more than 300 animated films, winning three Oscars as director and in 1996 an honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. Among the many awards and recognitions, one of those most valued was the honorary life membership from the Directors Guild of America.

During the Golden Age of animation Jones helped bring to life many of Warner Bros. most famous characters—Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig. The list of characters he created himself includes Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, Marvin Martian, Pepe le Pew, Michigan J. Frog and many others. He also produced, directed and wrote the screenplays for “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” a television classic, as well as the feature-length film “The Phantom Tollbooth.” In addition, Jones was a prolific artist whose work has been exhibited at galleries and museums worldwide.

On a personal note I got to meet Chuck Jones not once but twice in the late 80's at the Circle Art Galleries in Chicago and Houston. He is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. We talked about some his favorite cartoons including my favorites Marvin the Martian BTW I do a great Marvin according to Chuck, and The Three Bears [Bear for Punishment] I loved Papa Bear. Chuck said he based that cartoon on all of the strange gifts Fathers get on Fathers Day and the things they have to go through just to survive Father's Day. But my favorite memory of my meeting with Chuck Jones was the autographed Duck Dodgers cel and a hand drawn Bugs Bunny button. He is a true master of animation and one of the best persons I ever met.

June Foray Woman of 1000 Voices

June Foray she was the female version of Mel Blanc a woman of 1000 voices from Tweety Bird to Rocky squirrel. For over 80 years her voice gave life to those cartoon characters. Her passing brings to the end of the golden age of cartoons. For me it a bit more personal. I got to meet June Foray in the 80's when she and Bill Scott co-writer and voice of Bullwinkle and Mr. Peabody were part of a tribute to Jay Ward. She was pure joy to meet. I can still remember when I told her that when I was young I thought that Rocky was a boy. Then in her Rocky voice she said "How could you think that Rocky was a boy" I said meekly "I was only eight at the time I am sorry". She was a joy I will truly miss her.

History of Looney Tunes

Masters of Animation: Jay Ward

What can you say about Jay Ward if any animator could be called a political satirist it was Jay Ward. Even thought is first cartoon Crusader Rabbit was not a very political his next cartoon Rocky and Bullwinkle was they took a poke at government agencies like the CIA, the military, and congress in episode after episode Rocky and Bullwinkle had to work with the most inept people in the government like Capt. Peter “Wrongway” Peachfuzz the head of the CIA. Who always got it wrong but it somehow came out right.

Since this was in the height the cold war Rocky and Bullwinkle was being chased by two foreign spies Boris and Natasha who tried to stop them from completing their zany missions. Along with Rocky and Bullwinkle Jay Ward created a bunch of wild characters like Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties, Professor Peabody and Sherman, George of the Jungle, Hopptiy Hooper, and Super Chicken.

Jay Ward also took many of world’s favorite fairy tales and turned them upside down with “Fractured Fairy Tales” Jay Ward also had working with him writer Bill Scott who was the voice of Bullwinkle, Professor Peabody, and many other characters and June Foray who was the female version of Mel Blanc. June Foray was the voice of Rocky, Natasha, plus other female voices. Last but not least Paul Frese was the voice of Boris and actor William Conrad was the narrator of the Rocky and Bullwinkle show Conrad at time even became part of the show from time to time. Even today the Rocky and Bullwinkle can still make fun of politics cause as we all know the only thing changes in Washington are the names.

Masters of Animation: Max Fleischer

Max Fleischer (July 19, 1883 – September 11, 1972) was an Polish Jewish American animator, inventor, film director and producer Fleischer was a pioneer in the development of the animated cartoon and served as the head of Fleischer Studios. He brought such animated characters as Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, Popeye and Superman to the movie screen and was responsible for a number of technological innovations including the Rotoscope.

Fleischer devised a concept to simplify the process of animating movement by tracing frames of live action film.[1] His patent for the Rotoscope was granted in 1915, although Max and his brother Dave Fleischer made their first cartoon using the system in 1914. Extensive use of this technique was made in Fleischer's Out of the Inkwell series for the first five years of the series, which started in 1919, and starred Koko the Clown and Fitz the dog.

Betty Boop

Betty Boop

is an animated cartoon character appearing in the Talkartoon and Betty Boop series of films produced by Max Fleischer and released by Paramount Pictures. With her overt sexual appeal, Betty was a hit with theater-goers and despite having been toned down in the mid-1930s, she remains popular today

Classic Saturday Morning Cartoons

There are some cartoons that are  from studios are not as well known as Hanna-Barbera, Loony Tunes, or Filmation but are still considered a Saturday Morning classic. These shows include shows like Marvel Superheroes, The Mighty Hercules, and Space Angel. These shows were a bit quirky and didn’t have the best animation and the like the Marvel Superheroes that was just bits and pieces of actual comic books and Space Angel that used human lips under the animated characters. Still we watched them and loved them so much that today they are the guilty pleasures of our Saturday Morning memories. Come on you know it true we all love them. My guilty pleasure was Tom of T.H.U.M.B. Just don’t tell anyone

Classic TV Cartoons

The 80;s and 90's were the time of MTV, Big hair, blockbuster movies. It was also the time of big cartoons that exploded across Saturday Mornings. That gave us shows like ThunderCats, G.I. Joe, and Transformers. We also got a taste of anime in the form of RoboTech, Battle of The Planets, and The Voltron Lions that proved that the love of animation is truly worldwide.

Only a small group of Thunderans (Thundercats) remained. With only half engine power, the group, which was led by Jaga, had to set a course for the nearest planet. Jaga commanded their ship while the other 7 were in their stasis tubes. Jaga died on their journey to Third Earth and their ship crashed there. Soon they made friends with various groups in the area and they designed a fortress. Mumm-Ra the centuries-old embodiment of evil, along with the mutants that destroyed the rest of the Thunderans are a constant threat. But Lion-O, the new leader of the Thundercats, with his weapon the "Sword of Omens" will help the Thundercats to have a standing chance. Freedom is the right of all sentient beings, and cool toys are the right of all Transformers fans. Do your part by ordering Transformers for you or a friend. You'll be glad you did... and maybe you'll save the world!

Transformers is the name of a line of toys produced largely by Takara and sold outside of Japan by Hasbro since 1984. A Transformer is a sentient machine that's able to "transform," reconfiguring itself into a common and innocuous form, such as a car, aircraft, or animal. The taglines "More Than Meets the Eye" and "Robots in Disguise" reflect this ability.

There have also been a number of spinoffs based on the toys, including a Marvel comic book series, an animated television series that began airing in 1984, and feature-length movies like The Transformers: The Movie. A series of live-action films directed by Michael Bay started in 2007, and numerous new video games, comic books, and animated series are released every year.
